Dev Blog 23: Pathfinding improvements, Takeoff and Tweaks

May 21, 2016

So first of all we want to thank everyone who subscribed to us and watched the trailer. We now have over 600 followers on Reddit and the teaser video has just passed 10 000 views this week. Thanks for that!

Another thing we want to celebrate is that we handed in our thesis this week. This means that we now will be able to direct our full attention to Airport CEO so you can expect an acceleration in the development process, and rest assure the gameplay video is not far away!

So what have we done this week apart from boring school stuff? Well we did some work on the pathfinding system for the passengers. They can now generate a somewhat randomized path to their destination and does not always take the direct route (as in real life). We also did some tweaking and fixed a few bugs where passengers took shortcuts through queues and walls (damn these queue-jumpers) and so this is not allowed anymore in the Airport CEO world (what if real life could be like that???). We also solved a bug where passengers that already passed security suddenly decides to leave the secure zone to use a bathroom outside of the perimeter, very strange behavior and I wonder what TSA would say about that. However, this behavior is not allowed anymore to a few passengers disappointment.

What else? Yes, we finally added takeoff simulation which was really about time. For some reason this was left out, the planes just accelerated to the end of the world and were removed. The planes will now simulate a takeoff when they reach their respective takeoff speed (also called rotate speed or VR). As the game is in 2D the challenge here is to create a believable animation. It is achieved by slightly offsetting the shadow and rotate the sprite slightly.

We also started on making a more advance ATC (Air Traffic Control) system, so that aircrafts will not enter a busy runways or accidently taxi into each other etcetera. This system is not complete as of now but will be improved the following weeks.

Finally we did some general tweaking and fixing as always. I guess that is it for now.

Fly safe!
